Wi-Fi that actually reaches the back room

Wireless router and network cabling

The usual response to a weak signal is to buy a faster router. It rarely helps, because the problem is almost never the router speed.

Placement beats specification

Signal drops sharply through concrete, metal and water pipes. A router in a cupboard at one end of the building will lose to a cheaper router placed centrally and in the open, every time.

The two bands do different jobs

2.4 GHz travels further and penetrates walls better but is slower and heavily congested. 5 GHz is much faster over short, clear distances. A phone at the far end of the building wants 2.4 GHz; a desk near the router wants 5 GHz.

When to stop buying routers

If one router cannot cover the space, a second one will not fix it either. Mesh systems or a wired access point in the far room solve coverage properly, because they move the transmitter closer rather than shouting louder.

Wired where you can

Anything that does not move — a desktop, a recorder, a smart TV — is better on a cable. It is more reliable and it frees airtime for the devices that genuinely need wireless.
